Know Sitges
Sitges is a town of 30,000 inhabitants on the Catalan coast, south of Barcelona. It bases its economy on tourism and culture.
The climate of Sitges is pleasant all year round and high quality tourist infrastructure. Between hotels and holiday apartments it has about 4500 beds.
It receives visitors throughout the year because many companies choose Sitges as a place to hold meetings, encounters or courses or as a base for their employees to work at the congresses held in Barcelona. In recent years many freelancers have settled in Sitges.
The cultural events that take place throughout the year also attract many visitors. Film festivals, dance competitions, shows or exhibitions always ensure that there are always visitors.
Our rental apartments in Sitges are a good option to enjoy the best town on the Catalan coast at your leisure.
Nowhere else will you find such a rich historical and artistic legacy with a first-rate tourist infrastructure. In Sitges they organize internationally renowned events: here they hold car rallies, an international horror film festival, the most rampant carnival on the Catalan coast, the Sitges Gay Pride parade or the acts of the Fiesta Mayor.
The cultural offer is wide and covers the whole year. Despite being a small town, it has six museums and nine art galleries. Events and exhibitions of all kinds are continually organized.
Brief history of Sitges
Until the 19th century, Sitges was a coastal town like so many others. The main economic activities were the countryside, fishing and trade through the port.
From the 19th century, a period of economic growth began that continues to this day.
The arrival of the train at the end of the 19th century changed Sitges forever.
The Noucentista, Modernista and Bohemian artists arrived from Barcelona, placing it as a Catalan cultural reference.
The indianos (rich merchants returning from the Spanish colonies) endowed the town with colonial-style houses and palaces that remain today.
The Indians were interested in culture and were patrons of the artists. These created a cultural microclimate regardless of what was happening in Barcelona.
The entire economy began to revolve around these people’s businesses. They created industry and commerce and made Sitges a prosperous place. It is estimated that in the 30s there were more than 30 factories that employed almost the entire town.
The economic strength was so great that in 1923 they built a car racing circuit (Autòdrom de Terramar) and a golf club in 1927.
Tourism in Sitges
The great explosion of tourism in Sitges began in the 70s of the 20th century.
The Barcelona bourgeoisie discovered Sitges as a summer resort and changed the town’s economy forever.
It was already a place known by the upper class of Barcelona because there was a local bourgeoisie and they were familiar with the great parties of Noucentista artists.
The next change that marked Sitges was the liberation of the homosexual group at the end of Francoism and the 80s.
The gay collective found in Sitges a place to be free.
The inauguration of the first Pachá nightclub in 1966 was the beginning of other venues that give life to the Sitges nightlife. The cultural heritage, the open character of the Catalan bourgeoisie and tourism gave Sitges the reputation of a tolerant town with all tendencies.
Today it is a European and world benchmark for gay tourism. With all normality, businesses focused on this public coexist with the family atmosphere. The wide range of hotels or holiday apartments make this town an exclusive destination in the Mediterranean.
In recent years, some tourists have stayed to live, attracted by the good weather and the excellent services that Sitges offers.
